FAQ / Frequently Asked Questions
About the photo shoot
What are you photographing?
I photograph everything related to architecture: exteriors, interiors, single-family homes, office buildings, apartments, designer kitchens and bathrooms, and so on. I photograph not only for architects and interior designers or kitchen and bathroom studios, but also for hotels, real estate agencies, investors, restaurants, wellness centers, and property owners, and I also create presentations for shared living spaces, sales, and rentals. I also photograph for suppliers of building materials, such as shading systems, glazing, and facades.
I take photos anywhere in the Czech Republic, the European Union, and around the world. Currently, I most often photograph architecture and interiors in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, and Olomouc, but I’m also happy to venture outside major cities. For example, I flew a drone in Šumava National Park, where it’s only permitted with a special permit.
Who do you usually take photos of?
I most often work with architects and interior designers, as well as developers and, to a lesser extent, hotels. The second major group consists of suppliers and manufacturers of shading systems, glazing, flooring, screeds, facade systems, furniture, glass partitions, and more.
It is precisely because of this approach that cost-sharing works so well; a single project often brings together several of my typical clients. You can find examples of my work in the Projects section.
Do you take photos abroad as well?
Yes, I regularly shoot in Germany, Austria, and Poland; other European countries are possible by arrangement. I communicate in Czech and English. I travel to locations primarily by car; transportation is charged at a rate of 8 CZK/km from the Czech border, and any accommodation costs are calculated individually in the quote.
Photo shoots always last at least one day, and each day is dedicated to a single project—this applies both abroad and in the Czech Republic. Thanks to my certification, I can operate the drone throughout the EU.
Do you also shoot video?
Yes, in addition to photography, I also shoot videos focused on architecture and interiors. Video is a powerful tool for architects and interior designers to showcase their work, as it captures a space in motion and reaches a wider audience online and on social media.
You can order the video separately or as part of a photo shoot. The goal is to increase the impact of your presentation and, as a result, attract new clients. You can find examples on the Video page.
Do you also take photos from a drone? And what do I need to do?
Yes, I can photograph and film your project using a drone within the Czech Republic and EU member states. I am a certified operator with a license for aerial work, and I handle all flight permits myself; in most cases, you don’t have to do a thing.
Obtaining permits in some areas takes time, so it’s a good idea to mention the drone when you make your inquiry. In areas where flying is restricted or prohibited, I can take photos from a height of up to 8 meters using a tripod.
Planning and the Photo Shoot Process
What is the process for making an inquiry and establishing initial contact?
Send me an email or a message with a brief description of the project, and be sure to include your phone number. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible, and we’ll discuss the details of the project, the location, the shoot date, and the delivery date for the photos.
Based on our conversation, I will send you a price list and a specific quote. The more you tell me about the project—ideally including a link or a few photos from your phone—the more accurate the quote will be.
How far in advance should I book a photo shoot?
Feel free to contact me anytime—there’s no set rule. Sometimes I have an opening in two days, other times my schedule is booked solid for weeks in advance, especially during the peak season from April to September. If your preferred date doesn’t work out, we’ll always find another one together.
Keep in mind, however, that the planning process itself involves several steps: getting familiar with the project, agreeing on the scope and budget, and—for outdoor shoots—waiting for suitable weather and, if necessary, obtaining a drone permit. The sooner you get in touch, the better your chances of securing the ideal date and lighting conditions.
When is the best time for a photo shoot?
I’m busiest from April through September, so I recommend booking your session well in advance during this season. However, there’s no one-size-fits-all “best time of year”—it always depends on what you need the photos for.
Some projects call for greenery and sunlight, while others look best with snow or the atmosphere of winter light, and interiors can be photographed year-round. We’ll discuss the season and its impact on your project when planning the photo shoot.
What is scouting?
Scouting is a site visit before the photo shoot that allows us to plan the shoot precisely. For example, we’ll determine the best time of day for the shoot, decide to photograph the office building’s lobby outside of lunch hours, or realize that the building looks best when photographed from the building across the street.
I recommend scouting for larger and more complex projects. A scouting fee of 10,000 CZK applies, plus 8 CZK per kilometer for transportation; see the section on transportation for details.
What should I prepare before the photo shoot?
The property needs to be prepared in advance based on the purpose of the photo shoot and your vision. If the space is only set up during the shoot, it takes up time and reduces the number of photos we can take.
In private apartments and homes, the main obstacles are personal belongings, books, small items, and general clutter; in offices, it’s papers on desks and various pieces of equipment. You will also need to provide access to the premises, parking nearby, and any necessary permissions for photography. We will always discuss specific preparation instructions in advance, as each project is unique.
How long does the photo shoot itself take?
A photo shoot takes at least a few hours—for example, when photographing a new apartment—but I prefer it when you set aside an entire day for the project. That way, I have the opportunity to capture the project in the best light, with enough time to stage scenes and organize the space, and it’s not uncommon for me to return to the location several times throughout the day.
The entire photo shoot consists of location scouting, creating a shot list, setting up the space, the shoot itself, and putting everything back in its place. We can shoot for up to 16 hours in a single day, and each day is dedicated exclusively to one project.
How many photos are taken in a day?
For architects and interior designers, a single photo shoot (8 hours) typically yields up to 25 edited and delivered photos. However, every project and client is different, so we may produce as few as 8 photos or as many as 50, depending on your requirements.
How can we align our expectations for the final photos?
Before the photo shoot, we’ll work together to establish a clear vision of the final result so that I know what you expect from me and can meet those expectations. We’ll discuss the purpose of the photos, your references, and what’s most important for your project.
That’s why it’s important to have a designated person present during the photo shoot who can approve the photos on the spot. Our shared goal is to deliver the best possible results that meet your expectations, without having to figure out later where our visions diverged.
Should I be present during the photo shoot? (architect / designer)
I always recommend that you or your representative be present during the photo shoot. This way, we can review the shots on the spot, fine-tune the details, and ensure that the final photos best meet your expectations.
If no one participates in the photo shoot, my interpretation of the space will be considered approved. For more information, see the section on aligning expectations regarding the final photographs.
How does photography affect the weather?
It depends on the project requirements. I’ll take photos for architects anytime, even in bad weather, but a facade manufacturer, for example, needs photos taken in perfect weather, so the schedule may change.
The flexibility of the property owner, investor, or tenant at whose location the photos are being taken also plays a role. The space often needs to be prepared in advance, and last-minute schedule changes can be a problem, so we plan ahead and monitor the weather together.
After the photo shoot and delivery of the photos
What happens after the photo shoot is over?
You will receive a collection of selected photos, from which we will work together to choose the best ones for your needs. The selected photos will undergo careful editing, and you will then find them in the same collection in the highest quality for both web and print.
You’ll also have access to an archive of unedited previews, from which you can order additional photos at a later date. We’re happy to assist if you need the photos prepared for a specific purpose.
When will the photos be ready?
For orders of up to 15 photos, I deliver the finished photos within 7 to 14 days of receiving your selection. For larger orders, the turnaround time increases by one day for each photo over 15; for an order of 30 photos, please allow about a month.
Do you need the photos sooner? Express delivery is available for an additional fee starting at 900 CZK per photo. Just let me know the deadline in advance and we can work something out.
How does the photo delivery process work?
I deliver the finished photos digitally via an online storage service in the highest quality for both web and print. I do not use physical media such as CDs or USB drives.
Photos are guaranteed to be available for download for one year, but in practice, I haven’t deleted any projects from my archive since 2014. If you can’t find a photo after several years, please contact me and I’ll retrieve it from the archive for you free of charge.
Are all the photos edited?
Yes, all photos that have been ordered and submitted are carefully edited. We also address any unwanted details in the photos and remove them using Photoshop.
I also handle large-scale installations, such as replacing ceilings, modifying the surrounding area, or changing the colors of materials. These modifications are part of my creative process and the signature style you’ve come to recognize in my portfolio.
Can I edit the photos myself?
I deliver fully edited photos, and no further editing is necessary. I do not deliver unedited photos or RAW files, and they cannot be published.
If you need the photos customized for a specific purpose, such as a different format or cropping, please let me know and I’ll take care of it.
What if I'm not satisfied with the result?
I am sending you the edited photos for your review, and you have the opportunity to provide feedback. The price includes one round of revisions, during which I will incorporate your comments within the scope of the assignment; additional edits are available for a fee according to the price list.
The best way to ensure everything goes smoothly is for you or your representative to be present during the photo shoot so we can review the shots on the spot. If no one is present during the shoot, my interpretation of the space will be considered approved, which is why I always recommend that you attend.
Pricing, Licensing, and Billing
How much does architectural and interior photography cost?
Pricing always depends on the specific project and circumstances, so there is no standard price list. However, to give you an idea, I can outline three typical levels of collaboration.
For aspiring architects and designers, I photograph smaller initial projects starting at just a few thousand crowns, with a smaller number of photos, a shorter on-site shoot, and a limited license. Standard projects range in price from tens of thousands of crowns and include one to three days of shooting.
For special projects that don’t fit into a standard pricing structure, I provide custom quotes, and the budget can range from 250,000 CZK to several million CZK. Send me a brief description of your project, and I’ll prepare a preliminary quote for you.
What is cost sharing?
Sharing credit is a common practice in architectural photography. Multiple parties are always involved in a project—the architect, the construction company, and manufacturers of windows, lighting, furniture, and shading systems, among others—and each of them can use the professional photographs in their portfolios and marketing materials.
The cost of the photo shoot is therefore split among all participating parties, and each receives its own license to use the photos. As a result, you pay only a fraction of the total cost for top-quality photos, while the quality and scope of the shoot remain at the highest level.
In practice, there are three ways to do this. You can reach out to other parties yourself, or you can provide me with their contact information and I’ll reach out to them, or you can purchase multiple licenses and distribute the photos as you see fit.
How much does transportation to the photo shoot location cost?
If I make a single trip for a project, transportation within the Czech Republic is free. For location scouting prior to the shoot—that is, a second trip to the location—I charge a scouting fee of 10,000 CZK plus 8 CZK per kilometer. If a repeat trip is necessary for reasons beyond my control, I charge 8 CZK per kilometer and 1,200 CZK for each hour or portion thereof.
For international projects in Germany, Austria, Poland, and other countries, I charge 8 CZK per kilometer from the Czech border. Any accommodation costs for multi-day international photo shoots are calculated on a case-by-case basis as part of the quote.
What kind of license will I receive for the photos?
With these photos, you receive a license to use the work that is valid indefinitely and applies worldwide. You may use the photos for your online presence, social media, contests, publications, brochures, and advertising spaces.
This license does not authorize you to provide the photographs to third parties, such as companies that participated in the project. Any additional parties may purchase the license separately, ideally by splitting the cost, thereby dividing the photography expenses among everyone.
Do I have to credit the photographer?
Yes, please credit the photographer whenever you use the photos. Simply include legible text next to or near the photo, such as "Jiří Bednář" or "Photo: Jiří Bednář."
Tag me on Instagram with the credit @jiribednar, and on Facebook as Architectural Photographer Jiří Bednář. If the platform allows it, please include a link to my profile or website—it helps both your project and me.
What happens if someone uses photos without a license?
I always handle unauthorized use of photos on a case-by-case basis, as it is often a matter of misunderstanding. The simplest solution is to remove the photos, but an even better approach is to purchase a license, which legalizes the use of the photos and allows all parties to continue promoting the project.
If an agreement cannot be reached, I will proceed in accordance with the terms and conditions, which stipulate a contractual penalty of 50,000 CZK for any unauthorized commercial use. Fortunately, this happens only rarely; most situations are resolved through an agreement and a new license.
How does billing and payment work?
For our first project together, I issue a pro forma invoice for 50% of the estimated project cost, payable no later than one day before the photo shoot. For subsequent projects, I invoice after the photos have been delivered and approved, or on a monthly basis as agreed.
After the photo shoot, I’ll send you some previews, and you’ll have 7 days to select the photos; after that, I’ll make the selection myself to avoid any unnecessary delays. Invoices are due within 10 days, unless we agree otherwise.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule the photo shoot?
Rescheduling is always free of charge. With architectural photography, this is a normal part of the job—construction can be delayed, the weather can change, and I take that into account.
If you need to cancel the photo shoot entirely and I haven’t incurred any costs by that point, I will refund your deposit in full. Any costs already incurred, such as location scouting or permits, will be deducted from the deposit.

What is a media service?
Effective project presentation is essential, which is why, as an architectural and interior photographer, I also focus on promoting projects in the media. I collaborate with relevant Czech and international media outlets specializing in architecture, design, materials, and construction, ensuring that your project reliably reaches its target audience.
Where can I usually find you?
I’m based mainly in Brno, but I travel throughout the Czech Republic and abroad to explore architecture. We should definitely meet for a cup of good coffee at Mezzanine Café on Úvoz Street in Brno, where we can discuss our collaboration.
Or is that too far for you? No problem—I’d love to check out your local coffee shops, too.
